The New Zealand Company’s second settlement was founded on a site with far less flat land than it had sold to its buyers.

The Company had sold sections in London before surveying the land, and Nelson simply did not have the acreage promised. The search for more led the Company’s surveyors into the Wairau valley, which Ngāti Toa had never sold — and directly to the confrontation at Tuamarina the following year.
