Te Ua Haumēne’s faith, blending Christian and Māori belief, spread from Taranaki across the North Island and was met with force by the Crown.

Pai Mārire — ‘good and peaceful’ — offered a way to make sense of war, land loss and epidemic. Settlers called its adherents Hauhau and treated the movement as sedition. Its spread to the East Coast triggered fighting between Māori communities as well as with the Crown, and the campaigns against it produced the prisoners deported to the Chathams without trial in 1866.
